چکیده

We present results obtained from high-resolution direct numerical simulations (DNS) of incompressible, statistically homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, up to a Taylor scale based Reynolds number Reλ ≃ 200 and with millions of heavy particles with different inertia. In our set-up, particles are assumed to be spherical and rigid, they simply move by viscous forces, such as the Stokes drag. The velocity statistics is found to be extremely intermittent, with an almost bi-fractal behavior. Here, we consider also a new data analysis for the stationary distribution of rescaled longitudinal velocity difference and further assess the intermittent character of the heavy particles velocities, characterized by the presence of quasialgebraic tails.

Spatial and velocity statistics of inertial particles in turbulent flows

Spatial and velocity statistics of heavy point-like particles in incompressible, homogeneous, and isotropic three-dimensional turbulence is studied by means of direct numerical simulations at two values of the Taylor-scale Reynolds number Reλ ∼ 200 and Reλ ∼ 400, corresponding to resolutions of 512 and 2048 grid points, respectively. Particles Stokes number values range from St ≈ 0.2 to 70. Sta...

Wavelet Analysis to Detect Multi-scale Coherent Eddy Structures and Intermittency in Turbulent Boundary Layer

In the early stage of turbulence study, turbulent flow was deemed fully random and disorder motions of fluid particles. Thus physical quantity describing turbulence was considered as the composition of random fluctuations in spatial and temporal field. Reynoldsう1895えdivided the turbulent field into mean field and fluctuating field and then theories and methods based on statistics for turbulence...

Transport properties of heavy particles in high Reynolds number turbulence

The statistical properties of heavy particle trajectories in high Reynolds numbers turbulent flow are analyzed. Dimensional analysis assuming Kolmogorov scaling is compared with the result of numerical simulation using a synthetic turbulence advecting field. The relevance of the results obtained in the derivation of Lagrangian transport models is discussed. PACS numbers: 47.27.Qb 47.55.Kf 02.50.Ey

Statistics of Centroids of Velocity

We review the use of velocity centroids statistics to recover information of interstellar turbulence from observations. Velocity centroids have been used for a long time now to retrieve information about the scaling properties of the turbulent velocity field in the interstellar medium. We show that, while they are useful to study subsonic turbulence, they do not trace the statistics of velocity...
